I have pretty much been ignoring Herman Cain, and pretty much all the Republicans other than Romney and Perry, mostly because it looked unlikely that any of them had much of a chance. However, recent polls are showing Herman Cain right up there with the leaders. This is a huge.
So I have started listening to what Herman Cain is saying, and I like what I am hearing. No doubt we will find some things we don't like about him. To be sure, there are plenty of legitimate concerns about both Romney or Perry, though I would unhesitatingly support either against Obama.
Herman Cain has a very compelling biography. He was born a poor. His Mom worked some menial job and his Dad worked three jobs for the family to get by. He is a poster child for the American work ethic, having worked himself up the ladder of success. And he is black.
His blackness cannot be understated. To have a black Republican running for President may do more for black people than all social programs ever devised. He has a different message for the black community than what has been peddled by Liberals and Progressives for years. It's the same message Bill Cosby has been giving. Herman Cain is living proof that there are no barriers to success for black people who possess good character and a strong work ethic. Perhaps with is Presidency, we can put the final nail in the coffin of racism and forever end the endless racism smears Conservatives get from the Left.

the media's interpretation of the 999 plan scares me. ie 9% sales tax, 9% wage tax, and 9% corporate tax, with no deductions or exemptions. the scary thing is capital gains wouldn't be taxed all. and again, that's assuming the media has interpreted the 999 plan correctly. it'd boil down to 18% tax for the bottom. and near 0% tax for the top. which is pretty seriously regressive.
i'm all for replacing the current tax system *with*something*better*. no point overthrowing the shah for the ayatollah.
I am not too concerned about the particulars of his plan, as it is extremely unlikely to pass in that form anyways. I am thrilled that he is going to push for bold tax reform.
The more you move away from progressive taxes, the more productive a society you have. Our current tax system really discourages people from getting ahead. The goal should really be an increase of the GDP, and everyone does better. The quest for 'fairness' has the opposite effect.
I wish they'd focus on distributing good work ethic.
actually fv, the least productive societies are the ones with the most regressive taxes.
but yeah. totally agree our tax system is seriously upside down. let's open the dialog about replacing it.
